The End of Stand-Alone GPS?

Giant-killer Google is now officially in the market with an Android phone GPS system offering turn-by-turn directions via Google Maps on the phone. That, btw, includes a voice-powered search and it should hit the market next Friday via Verizon Wireless.

So is this the end of stand-alone GPS as we know it? Let’s consider. First, there’s the screen size ... Just a touch over 3.5 inches versus today’s standard GPS of 4.3. Next, there’s the data connection: Do you really think you can get Verizon Wireless seamlessly, across the nation? And finally, let’s ponder the implications of GPSing on a phone while driving .... Like when the guy in front of you is not only lost but he’s ALSO staring at his phone. Nice.
So are existing GPS systems doomed? I say no.•
