Tamil protesters continue vigil outside U.S. Consulate in downtown Toronto

TORONTO - A busy Toronto thoroughfare remains closed to traffic for a second day because of a loud, but peaceful, protest by Tamils and their supporters.

The sound of drums and chanting continued through the night and police say the protest on University Ave. may continue through the rush hour. However, some people in the crowd warn they would remain outside the U.S. Consulate for days.

The protesters want the U.S., Canada and the United Nations to stop military action by the Sri Lankan government against the Tamil people.

In Sri Lanka, the Tamil Tigers called Sunday for a unilateral ceasefire in the 25-year civil war, but the government quickly rejected that call.

Police have taken no action to remove the protesters.
