Saudi court restores death sentence on Canadian: reports

OTTAWA - A lower court in Saudi Arabia has reportedly upheld the death penalty against a Canadian, rejecting the recommendations of the country's high court.

The English-language newspaper Arab News says the Jeddah General Court has upheld the sentences imposed on Mohamed Kohail of Montreal and a Jordanian friend. Both were convicted of murder in the death of a 19-year-old Syrian killed during a 2007 schoolyard brawl.

The court had been asked by the Supreme Judicial Council in February to review its verdict.

Liberal consular affairs critic Dan McTeague says it's now time for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to speak personally with Saudi King Abdullah about the case.

The prime minister and the king are both attending the G20 Summit in London.
