N.L. signs historic deal to send power from hydro project through Quebec

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - For the first time in the province's history, Newfoundland and Labrador has signed an agreement to wheel power through Quebec to the North American marketplace.

Premier Danny Williams says the province began selling energy to the United States on Wednesday. That energy comes from the Churchill Falls power station in Labrador.

The transmission of power through Quebec has been a long-standing point of contention between the two provinces.

Williams said Thursday the agreement is a step on the road to self-reliance and long-term prosperity for the province.

"Newfoundland and Labrador is now taking a bite out of the Big Apple," Williams said at a news conference.

"This is truly a historic and momentous occasion for the people of our province."
