More than 100 people arrested in Toronto-area crackdown on guns and gangs

TORONTO - More than 100 people in the Toronto area were arrested Wednesday in a crackdown on guns and gangs.
About 1,000 officers took part in dozens of pre-dawn raids, primarily in east-end Toronto, but also elsewhere in Ontario, said Toronto police chief Bill Blair. The raids were of an "unprecedented" scale, he said.
"This is a criminal organization investigation targeting very high levels of organized crime," Blair said. "But there have been a number of peripheral arrests also made today."
Blair did not disclose additional details, except to say he was pleased with the outcome.
"It has been done safely and we have achieved the purposes we set out to do," he said.
The Toronto raids, which began just after 5 a.m., were led by the force's guns and gangs unit, said Const. Wendy Drummond.
Toronto police were expected to comment further on the investigation at a 2 p.m. news conference at the force's headquarters.
