LAVAL, Que. - A woman has been sent to hospital to undergo psychiatric tests after the bodies of her two young daughters were found in the family home.
The bodies of the victims, who were aged eight and nine respectively, were found slain Tuesday afternoon by family members in a home in the Duvernay district of Laval, just north of Montreal.
Police began searching for the girls' parents and found the 43-year-old mother early Wednesday after she was in a minor traffic accident near her home.
A Laval police spokeswoman says Adele Sorella is a suspect in connection with the murders of the two girls.
The mother was taken to hospital "because she seemed little bit confused and not too coherent when detectives first met with her," said Nathalie Lorrain.
"She has been arrested but we want to make sure before we question her if she understands what we are saying and if she can appear in court."
The police spokeswoman said there was no sign of violence in the house.
"We have to wait for the coroner to tell us after the autopsy what would have caused the deaths of the two little girls," Lorrain said.
She said when ambulance technicians and a doctor arrived at the home, it was too late to try to revive the girls.
"We're thinking they may have been dead for a couple of hours."
Lorrain said investigators are also trying to determine if the woman intentionally rammed her car into a Hydro pole.
Authorities have been seeking the girls' father for some time on a matter unrelated to the deaths of his daughters.
Lorrain said there is an outstanding arrest warrant for the man, but he is not considered a suspect in the two murders.
The father is being sought in connection with a major police operation that targeted mobsters in 2006 and Lorrain said the family hasn't seen him since the warrant was issued.
"Maybe, with what happened, he will get in touch with us. We have no idea how to reach him," she added.
