Colombian drug baron Montoya gets 30 years in American prison

MIAMI - A Colombian who admitted running finances for the North Valley cocaine cartel has been sentenced to 30 years in U.S. prison.

A Miami federal judge imposed the sentence today on 39-year-old Eugenio Montoya Sanchez. Montoya previously pleaded guilty to U.S. drug trafficking and obstruction of justice charges.

Montoya admitted overseeing the cartel's financial dealings and money-laundering operations.

He also acknowledged playing a role in the torture and death of a man cartel leaders thought was co-operating with authorities.

Montoya's brother, alleged North Valley kingpin Diego Montoya Sanchez, has pleaded not guilty to U.S. drug charges. A third Montoya brother is serving a 22-year sentence in a U.S. prison.
