Chances of Nova Scotia election grow as impasse remains over finance bill

HALIFAX, N.S. - It appears an election could be underway in Nova Scotia as early as the end of this week.

Government house leader Cecil Clarke says a bill that would allow the government to spend money earmarked for the debt will have to be dealt with before a budget is tabled.

The opposition parties have already said they're not interested in supporting the government's bill, which would bring the government down in a confidence vote.

They say the changes to the Finance Act are politically driven to allow the government to avoid reporting a deficit for the 2008-09 budget year.

Premier Rodney MacDonald has warned he could pull the plug on the legislature if the opposition parties don't support his minority government's spring budget.

The budget is expected shortly after the house resumes sitting on Thursday.
