Fort Collins, CO (NBC) -- Investigators now say the incident surrounding a 6-year-old boy and a runaway balloon was all a hoax and they expect to soon file charges against his parents.
"We believe we have evidence at this point to indicate that it was a publicity stunt in hope to marketing themselves for a reality television show at some point in the future," Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden said.
The reality of this situation is now stranger than fiction. If the Heene's were looking for attention, they got it. A former business associate of the Heene's says she is not surprised.
"This is his life," Barbara Slusser said. "It's about the media and getting himself in the media."
But with the possibility of serious charges and the potential for jail time, Richard and Mayumi Heene have grown quiet over the last few days. Their attorney, David Lane, does all of the talking now.
"Until I can look at what the evidence is in this case we're left in the dark in terms of what the Sherriff's department claims they got," Lane said.
Investigators say they have evidence of several crimes, and they also believe the children were part of the Heene's plan.
"The children were 100% involved," Sheriff Jim Alderden said.
As the criminal investigation continues, agents with the Colorado child protective services are looking into the case. That could be especially telling since on of the potential criminal charges is contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
