An ambulance isn't much good if it's in an accident driving to or from a call.
That's why Sun Parlour Emergency Services has always monitored the speeds of paramedics.
Bruce Krauter, Sun Parlour operations manager, said the rule was on paper before, but has been gauged electronically through GPS for the past four years.
"It's always been in place," he said. "It's about safety, for both the ambulances and the driving public."
The issue of capping a vehicle's speed has made recent headlines due to new legislation affecting truckers.
However, the difference is that with ambulances, the speed isn't physically capped through a limiter.
At Sun Parlour, an ambulance can travel 20 km/h over the posted speed limit -- and only in an emergency situation.
"So normal driving, they're not supposed to speed," he said.
Services in other jurisdictions may have different limits, Krauter said.
"It's covered actually under the Ambulance Act," he said.
Krauter said Sun Parlour has progressive discipline -- such as counselling and education -- for anyone caught breaking the rule. However, he said there hasn't been a problem.
