 Satellite : TV Prediction: Dish Will Not Return Peachtree TV TV Prediction: Dish Will Not Return Peachtree TV Washington, D.C. (February 16, 2012) -- Note: Every weekday, Swanni, president of TVPredictions.com, will post a new prediction on a TV related matter on the Home Page of this web site. Today, Swanni gazes into his crystal ball and offers a forecast on Dish Network and Peachtree TV. Since Jan. 27, Dish subs have been unable to watch Peachtree TV due to a fee fight between the two companies. The channel will air roughly 45 Atlanta Braves games this year as well as college football and basketball. You would think that Dish would be anxious to sign a new deal with Peachtree to keep sports fans in Atlanta happy. But I predict it won't happen, at least not this year. Why? Dish has made it clear that it will not overspend -- or even spend a fair market price in some cases -- to carry regional sports channels. The satcaster has had a number of fee fights with regional sports networks over the last year or two and currently does not carry any of the four New York regional sports channels due to disagreements over carriage fees. Basically, in some markets, Dish is ceding the sports audience to DIRECTV, which has a long tradition of catering to the sports crowd with packages such as the NFL Sunday Ticket. Dish seems to believe it can win over subscribers with a mix of low-cost programming packages and other creative ventures such as new DVRs that can automatically record every network primetime show. I don't think Dish is right. Sports fans are arguably the most passionate viewers and they are likely to drop a pay TV provider just because it doesn't carry a single channel. But I think Dish has made a calculated gamble that it can make more money by dropping some regional sports channels -- and, consequently, spending less on program acquisition. So -- and I hope I'm wrong, Atlanta sports fans -- but I predict Dish will not sign a new deal with Peachtree in 2012.  |
