Washington, D.C. (February 14, 2012) -- Note: Every weekday, Swanni, president of TVPredictions.com, will post a new prediction on a TV related matter on the Home Page of this web site. Today, Swanni gazes into his crystal ball and offers a forecast on Dish and Blockbuster Video.

Last spring, Dish Network (now known as just Dish) purchased Blockbuster Video in a bankruptcy auction for roughly $320 million. The satcaster expressed high hopes for the once-powerful video chain, even saying it would keep open as many as 1,500 Blockbuster stores and someday challenge Netflix in a head-to-head national match-up.
However, Dish has since learned more than it probably ever wanted to know about the byzantine world of the Hollywood studios and video release windows. It takes a lot of money -- and some shifty legal maneuvering -- to acquire the rights to new videos these days. And even when you do, the studios place so many restrictions on how and when you can distribute them, it makes it extremely difficult to craft a profitable business model. Throw in the new realities of streaming and the studio's desire to preserve the sell-through business for DVDs and Blu-ray discs...well, there was a reason Blockbuster declared bankruptcy in the first place.

So I predict that Dish will slowly close the doors on Blockbuster, first eliminating all of its retail stores in 2012 and then doing away with its streaming/disc rental service by 2013. The satcaster will conclude -- if it hasn't done so already -- that it's not up for a fight with Netflix or any other video rental service.
Dish will say, once and for all...Bye, Bye, Blockbuster.
