Dish Adds Subs; Strikes Blow at Cord Cutters
By Swanni Washington, D.C. (February 23, 2012) -- Dish Network today provided more evidence that the 'cord-cutting' trend may be coming to an end by announcing that it added 22,000 net subscribers in the fourth quarter.

Last week, DIRECTV said it added 125,000 subscribers in the fourth quarter while Comcast said it only lost 14,000 subs, a sharp decline from previous quarters where the cable operator reported losing hundreds of thousands of customers.

Some analysts and tech enthusiasts have said in recent months that consumers are dropping their pay TV services to watch relatively inexpensive video services over the Net, such as Netflix. However, the sub gains made by Dish and DIRECTV -- and the near elimination of losses by Comcast -- would suggest that few people are actually cutting the cord.

Dish surpassed Wall Street analyst estimates that it would add only about 5,000 subs in the fourth quarter. Many Wall Street analysts have said cord cutting is a real threat to pay TV services.
