DIRECTV Rolls Out TiVo HD DVR Nationwide

Washington, D.C. (February 9, 2012) -- DIRECTV has rolled out its new TiVo HD DVR nationwide after first offering it in 10 markets in December.

The set-top does not include the Broadband-enabled features found on retail TiVo HD DVRs such as multi-room viewing, multiple tuners to record four shows at once, and movies from TiVo's streaming partners like Amazon.

Consequently, some industry analysts have questioned how well this new product will do with a DIRECTV audience that can get those features from DIRECTV-branded HD DVRs. (TiVo's DIRECTV HD DVR does offer DIRECTV's Video on Demand service.)

But TiVo, which captured more than one million subscribers via a partnership several years ago with DIRECTV, expressed confidence that this new agreement will be a success. (DIRECTV ended the initial partnership in 2005, but the two companies signed a new deal in September 2008; it's taken this long to launch their first product.)

"DIRECTV customers nationwide can now experience the TiVo HD DVR from DIRECTV, which combines TiVo's award-winning user interface with DIRECTV's great lineup of HD programming," said David Sandford, general manager of TiVo's service provider business. "With the introduction of this product, DIRECTV customers can again experience TiVo's gold-standard interface, easy-to-use peanut remote and Swivel™ Search feature, which allow users to effortlessly find their favorite shows in HD across television and on DIRECTV Cinema."

The DIRECTV/TiVo HD DVR, which will cost 9 and require a separate monthly user fee ( more than the service fee for a DIRECTV-branded HD DVR), can:

* Set Season Pass Recordings that will automatically record all of a user's favorite shows each week so they'll never miss an episode;

* Create WishList Searches, which allow users to set up automatic recordings for TV shows and movies based on keywords -- such as their favorite actor's name, sports team or personal interest;
* Record up to 100 hours of HD programming or 400 hours of SD programs.
* Record two shows at once.
