| DN is currently having a nationwide problem. All subscriptions may see Error Code 005 on the screen. DN further states that there is no time-frame for this issue being resolved. Same goes for IKS receivers...But for those of us just running regular receivers were fully up..IKS reporting no PPV Slinger, Nfusion haveing issues.. |

Not sure how true this is but if it gives us HBO all weekend ...I'm for it... C/P...tyson01 Just to be clear on what happened, because it does happen a few times a year, maybe not a full system problem like this morning, lol, but it does happen with some channel groups. Early this morning it "looks like" DN had a tier subscription issue, teirs are how subscribers get some channels but not others. This tier problem caused many subscribers to lose their available channels, when it was clear to DN that is problem was system wide they chose to stop scrambling the channels. And just to be clear on this point, digital channels are scrambled, not "encrypted", the scrambling of a digital channel has nothing to do with N3, N3 is an encryption/decryption method used for Control Words, more on this below. The reason FTAs could/can get DN in the first place is because DN uses FTA type signals, MPEG2 DVB, and now MPEG4. So without the scrambling a DN channel is the same as any True FTA channel, True FTA just means no scrambling, so any FTA receiver can view any unscrambled DN channel like the NASA channel is all the time. DN receivers are FTA receivers, so if a channel is not scrambled the DN receiver can get it without the tiers, so DN got their subscribers back up this way. N3 was never "out of the stream" it just wasn't needed because the channels were not scrambled. DN channels are scrambled using a Control Word(CW), one CW per channel, a CW is a random number string, this Control Word is then Encrypted using N3 and sent to all subscribers along with the scrambled video, the smartcard then uses N3 to decrypt the CW and give it to the receiver to unscramble that one channel. So with no scrambling there is no need for a Control Word just like all True FTA channels. When DN fixed the problem they then start to scramble the channels and N3 was again back in use on those channels. At times DN runs promotions to get more subscribers for the HBO package as an example, they will run HBO channels unscrambled over a weekend. They can also have a problem with a computer that effects specific channels, these channels might be swtched to True FTA(not scrambled) until problem is fixed. Key word Might And no there is no benefit to "coders" while channels are unscrambled, N3 is not related to this, its all in the N3 card, nothing in the satellite signal helps with that. |
