No one forces fighters to get themselves into these situations.
Father Edward Beck, a media-inclined Roman Catholic priest, appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America Now" on Friday to debate the somewhat left-field topic ofmixed martial arts with host Chris Cuomo.
"If you have a sport where the primary objective is to pummel the other person until they are unconscious or hurting and can't come back at you anymore, and that's how you win, I don't see that as a sport," Beck said. "I see that as an immoral partaking of two individuals that should be censored in some way."
Beck is welcome to his opinion, naturally, and I don't see any issue in anyone being repulsed by MMA because unless you've been desensitized to the gore, it's a pretty disgusting attraction. He's also far from hypocritical, stating boxing is equally reprehensible and quoting chapter and verse the number of deaths in a prizefight ring.
Cuomo played devil's advocate to uneven effect, stating that the sport "is illegal" in many places, then defending the idea that smaller gloves and grappling means fewer solid strikes to the head than in boxing.
It's an interesting watch, if only for Beck's escalating desperation as he trots out some increasingly bizarre arguments. On the subject of the body being a temple, even in light of the fact athletes are consenting adults: "We don't allow snuff films … they're consenting!"

That's some funny stuff man. There has been NO life-threatening injuries in this sport yet. There is WAAAAAYYYYY more of a chance that you'll get injured simply walking or driving down the street. Some people man, I tell you. They always gotta complain bout somethin'. Hey, these athletes are among the most physically and mentally strong people on the entire planet. They could be out doing alot worse things than what they are doing. They are role models. Good folks, ya know? I've personally practiced Jiu-Jitsu for 12 years, and I train teenagers. MMA has really turned alot of people's lives around, including mine. I've had "BAD" kids come to classes, and within 3 months, not only were they out of trouble, but their grades in school rose and they CHOSE to have some responsibilities in their life. It's freakin amazing man. But, some folks just don't care. They see blood, and think the guys are dying. It's a joke. Thanks for the good laugh Raju!!
