FTA Newbie needs help

I had dtv (still have the service, till I get FTA working), a friend gave me a DN 105 superdish, with a switch box on the back. I planted the dish, and set it up per dishpointer.com, took the wire off the dtv dish, hooked it to the #1 receiver out on the DN switch. Best I can get is 54 strength 0 quality on my Captive Works 800s. How do I program the birds in, and what settings do I need to adjust? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks so much. Jason

Welcome to the family!

I'm not a hardware gal, but if you'll give the hardware gurus here more information about your setup, they should be able to help you. They're going to want to know what switch and how you're hooked up along with the settings for your dish. More information is better.

In the meantime, please read some of the threads concerning your problem with set-up and locking in on adequate signals. From your description, it sounds like you're not pointed quite right for the bird your aiming at, but like I said, I'm not a hardware person.

Thanks for the info harryb, but you may as well be talking japanese to me. I kind of understand some of it, but the way it runs together, not exactly sure what each one is. if you could elaborate a little, it would be great. sorry, thanks, Jason

First off you have not even told us what Receiver you have. However all of those setting's harryb gave you you will be able to set in the antenna setup Screen when you go to menu. you have to have good signal and quality before you scan your sat's should see it in the upper right of the screen if you have you dish alligned correctly. You need a meter yo align the dish you just cant set it up with what the dish pointer software tells you to set it only gets you close.

ok, it is a captive works 800s...i thought i mentioned it, sorry. where do i get a meter? how much is that?

You did mention the receiver in your post...near the end, so I can see why Cougar may have missed it.

You can purchase a meter most anywhere dishes are sold. They vary in price and features, so I'd recommend you look around at several internet sites before making a choice. Perhaps someone here can recommend a couple for you to review.

you can use your receiver if you have the correct settings. Best thing for you to do at the present time is go to the How Too Section and download a how too file for your receiver. Then when you get ready to set it up come back and we will help you. It is imparative you learn some things on how to set up a receiver. It is just easier to use a meter but they run anyware from $10 to $600 or so you would not need any expensive ones they are for professional installers.
