 Why Comcast's Streampix Should Scare Netflix Why Comcast's Streampix Should Scare Netflix By Swanni Washington, D.C. (February 22, 2012) -- Comcast yesterday announced it's launching a new subscription video service that will enable its 20 million video customers to instantly view movies and TV shows in and out of the home. The cable operator joins a rapidly expanding list of prominent industry companies offering streaming services including Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, the Dish-owned Blockbuster Video and, later this year, Verizon and Redbox. Called Streampix, the service is expected to be available tomorrow and it will be included for free with many Comcast Xfinity triple-play packages, Blast! and Blast! Extra video/high-speed Internet packages. For all other Comcast video subs, it will cost $4.99 a month. See Swanni's Analysis Below! Comcast said it would offer the service on TV as a subscription Video on Demand folder and via mobile devices such as the iPad and iPhone. Later in the year, it will also be available on the TV via the XBox 360 and Android-powered devices. The Streampix lineup will include past full seasons of such TV series as 30 Rock, Grey's Anatomy, Heroes and Lost. Movies will include such past hits as Brokeback Mountain, Ocean's Eleven, When Harry Met Sally and Stuart Little. "Streampix is another step moving TV Everywhere forward by giving customers access to an even greater library of popular choices to watch," said Marcien Jenckes, senior vice president of video services for Comcast.  |
